Lenoir grape is a highly disease resistant heirloom blue grape popularized in the 1830's by Nicholas Herbemont of Columbia, SC and Mr Lenoir from Statesburg, SC. Mr. Lenoir found it as a naturally occurring hybrid near the Santee River. Because of it's phyloxphers and Pierce's disease resistance, it made it's way to harsh climates such as Texas, where it was used in Texas Port wines and blended with red wines adding dark color and earthy aroma. Recently being used in single variety dry wines. Lenoir compared to vinifera grapes are less expensive to cultivate and less risky. Lenoir has a different taste than vinifera without Concord overtones. Called Black Spanish in Texas and Jacquez and or Jacquet in France. Like Norton, this variety is gaining favor as a local sourced American variety. zone
